Picked up a home from my speakers at work...

I closed on a forclosed home today. The living room is 15 x 11. My three 828 cabs will go across the long side front with 816 511/811 hanging for side surround and 605's or 600 for rear surround. My question is has anybody built sub horns exiting up through the floor? Obviously the waf is not a problem. It"s a 7.1 system and the room will probably be as dead as I can get it.

A friend did, but hasn't been heard from since he stepped off in the hole...

Seriously though, no, but I've seen pics of some nice through-the-wall jobs. For a floor opening, a basement/crawl IB might be better.

    Congrats on the house!

I never got to hear it, but there is a system in Portland that uses the basement as the woofer box. Said to be amazing.

I would probably run an IB (infinite baffle) setup , but you can always google around. The link that OG gave has been been seen countless of times... Those horn subs are massive....

There is a forum on the AA by the moniker of ESO, I think, But he has been using horn sub that start at his basement and lead into the top of his 3rd floor listening room. All concrete formed and all. Hw swears by them,, also the IB guys do to .....

The IB stress to build a manifold and not a straight line array... due to the stresses caused by the spl's generated......

Either way , would be impressive....

Yeah, that's cool, but it would take ~60 sq ft of his 160 ft available just for the hole(s) in the floor...

Still leaves him 100 sq ft.

Yeah I know...that didn't work on the redhead either.

Re: Picked up a home from my speakers at work...

Ok all, I appreciate the the input that I've gotten so far. But, here's the scoop.... I have a old coal room under the front right corner of the house. It's 6'x6'x7' up to the rafters. By my rough calculations to do a IB I'll need another 8 eminence sigma pro 18's to equal l the vas of the speakers.(I have 8 already) Or I have 4 selenium sws800's that i can horn load and empty under the couch. And I'm figuring a 2'x6' mouth. But if I do the horn/couch I don't need the coal room. Especially since the couch would sit outside the room on the first floor. I'm not worried about structual integrity either, since there's a 4"X12" ibeam running down the length of the house. I'll do more research on both the horn and IB enclosers tonight . Thanks for everything so far guys.

FWIW, for an IB you typically want a 4-10x Vas chamber, so sounds like you ideally have enough space for only four drivers. Since this driver has such a low Qts though, eight is about right to be damped similar to a horn and at an inaudibly low distortion 1/8 power, still good for ~120 dB/20 Hz before the room's gain is factored in.
